Women's Soccer Stumbles at Rhode Island, 3-0

KINGSTON, RI - George Washington women's soccer fell behind early and was never able to recover, as they fell 3-0 at Rhode Island on a crisp Friday night at the URI Soccer Complex. Jessica Babice led the way for the Rams, recording two first half goals.
For GW, who is now 8-9-0, 3-7-0 in the A-10, the win snapped a two-match losing streak and dropped their all-time mark against Rhode Island to 6-10-1. The Rams improved to 12-5-2 and 6-3-2 in conference action.
Rhode Island, who entered tonight's match in the sixth and final playoff position with two games to play, wasted little time in securing an early lead. As the Rams attacked, Becca Fish passed the ball ahead on the right side to Jessica Babice. The freshman took a shot from 20-yards out and lined it off the far post for the 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute.
Babice would score her second goal of the match, and seventh of the season, just 15 minutes later, when she headed home a cross from teammate Kassandra Spitler. Shortly after halftime, already leading 2-0, the Rams put the game out of reach with their third goal of the match. This time, Babice provided the assist, as she found Dora Larusdottir on the left side of the box. Larusdottir, who entered the weekend fifth in the A-10 with nine goals, drilled the ball into the upper right 90, sneaking the ball past GW keeper Amie Kern (Saylorsburg, PA/Stroudsburg).
Juniors Kerry Philbin (Herndon, VA/Bishop Denis J. O'Connell) and Meg Pyle (Franklin Park, NJ/Mount St. Mary Academy) paced the Colonial offensive attack as they tried to recover, recording two and three shots, respectively, including a shot on goal each. Overall, Rhode Island recorded 13 shots compared to GW's nine.
George Washington women's soccer will conclude their 2007 season Sunday, November 4th, when they play at Massachusetts (9-6-1, 4-6-0 A-10), at 11:00 a.m.
