CHARLOTTE, NC -- The GW volleyball team lost a close A-10 Conference match, 3-2, to Charlotte Thursday night at Halton Arena. The Colonials hope to return to Halton Arena in two weeks, site of this year's A-10 Tournament, with different results. The 49ers defeated the Colonials 28-30, 30-16, 30-27, 21-30, 15-12 in a two-hour, 41-minute marathon that saddled both teams with 4-7 league records.
GW senior Janine Brown led three Colonials in double-figure kills with a team-high 24 to go with 14 digs. Junior Liz Moult and sophomore Katie Butz each added 10 kills while Abby Syverson recorded a career-high eight block assists. Senior setter Jess Buche had one of the best performances of her career as she hit .545 on seven kills in 11 swings with just one error while assisting on 41 kills and six blocks. Butz and Erica Williams each assisted on five blocks.
Statistically, the match was as close as it was on the scoreboard with each team recording 13 total blocks and six aces. Charlotte combined for 66 kills, just two better than GW's 64 kills, but the difference in the match was the Colonials' 43 attack errors leading to a .095 team hitting percentage. Charlotte was not much better as the 49ers gave away 33 points on attack errors but managed a .136 team hitting percentage in 24 fewer attempts.
Charlotte (14-12, 4-7 A-10) was led by Alma Arroyo's match-high 27 kills and 30 digs while Cori Dayton added 14 kills and Carly Romberg dug 36 attacks. The 49ers combined for 103 digs on "Dig for the Cure" Night to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.
The Colonials and 49ers will meet again in eight days at GW's Charles E. Smith Athletic Center in the regular-season finale. Both teams are battling for one of six spots in the A-10 Volleyball Championship, hosted by Charlotte.
GW (12-15, 4-7 A-10) returns to Smith Center Sunday to host Fordham at noon.
