PRINCETON, NJ - The women's rowing varsity eight finished 36th of 46 at this past weekend's Princeton Chase which featured several of the nation's top crews.
The lineup of coxswain Katie Martin, Jean Williamson, Angela Wunderli, Bess Austin, Rhonda Crittle, Bonnie Scott, Ellen Van Cleave, Laura Crotty and Emily Geise finished in 16:24.269, just ahead of crews from MIT and Penn.
"I thought the open eight looked much better than it did last weekend at the Head of the Charles," said Head Coach Rob McCracken.
The Eights were not the only teams to place well for the Colonials as all three Fours placed in the top 30 out of 49. The boat comprised of Elizabeth Austin, Emily Geise, Laura Crotty and Emily Esman finished 20th overall with a time of 18:25.641. Katie Martin coxed the line-up of Jean Williamson, Rhonda Crittle, Jina Morsi and Allison Miedema to a 22nd place finish. Gina Fernandez guided Bonnie Scott, Angela Wunderli, Stephanie DeFlora and Carrie Rollman to 29th place.
"The fours consisted of line-ups that we just kind of threw together so I was pleased that they each had a good row," said Head Coach Rob McCracken.
Overall, the coaching staff was pleased with the showing at the Chase. "Our team did a great job executing today. We implemented the technical changes we have been working on in practice, which is what we wanted to do coming into the race. We have a fairly inexperienced team this year so much of the fall has been spent working on improving our technique. While we are rowing much better, I think the results clearly show that we still need to get stronger. Thankfully it's a long season and I am confident that we will be ready come spring."
