Softball Places Eight on NFCA Academic Scholar-Athlete Team

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University softball team had eight athletes earn National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) 2006-07 Academic Scholar-Athlete honors, as announced by the NFCA this week. As a team, the Colonials' 3.42 cumulative grade-point-average ranked 10th best among Division I Institutions.
Senior Katie Miller (Manteo, NC) and junior Carrie Higdon (Newburg, MD) along with former Colonials, Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA), Hilary King (Canal Winchester, OH), Katy Harrigan (Reading, MA), Lisa Cohen (Langhorne, PA), Nikki Brooks (Chillicothe, OH) and Janelle Parker (Mount Vernon, NY).
In order to be recognized as an NFCA Academic Scholar-Athlete, an individual must achieve a 3.5 or better GPA on a 4.0 scale for the academic year.
GW, which completed just its fifth year of softball, qualified for their first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament in 2007. The Colonials open their 2008 campaign when they travel to Chapel Hill, NC on Feb. 8-10 to compete at the Carolina Classic against the host Tar Heels, Kent State, East Carolina and North Carolina Central. GW's home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 27 in a 2:00 pm doubleheader against Towson at the Mount Vernon Softball Field. The Mount Vernon Athletic Complex is located at 2100 Foxhall Road, NW.
