Volleyball Overwhelmed by Saint Louis, 3-0

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW volleyball team took a step backward Sunday in a lopsided 3-0 loss to visiting Saint Louis in an A-10 Conference match at GW's Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The defending A-10 champion Billikens needed just 83 minutes to dispatch the Colonials by the scores, 30-17, 30-18, 30-18. It marked the first time since the 2003 season that GW failed to score at least 20 points in a game.
Both games one and two were close up to the 10-point mark. In the first game, the teams were knotted at 10-10 when a kill by SLU's Bridget Fonke ignited a 20-7 run as the Billikens won easily. Game two began with the teams battling to a 9-9 tie before Saint Louis took over on a pair of kills by Fonke and Sutton Lasater and coasted to the 30-18 victory.
Game three was all Saint Louis as the Billikens took a commanding 14-4 lead that ballooned to 24-9. The Colonials rallied to put together an 8-5 run before succumbing, 30-18.
GW coach Jojit Coronel used both setters to no avail. Senior Janine Brown's string of 21 straight matches of scoring double-figure points and double-figure kills both came to an end in Sunday's match as the captain tallied a season-low 7.5 points on just six kills. Brown, who averaged 14.2 digs per game entering Sunday, managed just two digs on the afternoon and remains seven digs shy of 1,000 for her career. Only Liz Moult (.231), Jackie Yaniga (.214) and Abby Syverson (.200) managed to hit for a positive percentage as the Colonials combined to hit a season-low .029 for the match.
Saint Louis (17-5, 6-2 A-10) was led by Lauren Christman's 15.5 points on 11 kills and seven blocks. Fonke added 15 points on 10 kills and three blocks while Sammi McCloud added 13 points on 12 kills and 11 digs for the Billikens.
GW (11-13, 3-5 A-10) next travels to La Salle (9-17, 1-6 A-10) Friday aiming to avenge the Sept. 30 loss to the Explorers at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. La Salle has lost eight straight matches since defeating the Colonials in Washington.
