Softball Releases 2008 Season Schedule

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University softball coach Kim Staehle announced the release of the Colonials' 2008 season schedule today. This season's slate is highlighted by at least four NCAA Tournament teams, three of which will be hosted by GW.
The Colonials open their season in Chapel Hill, NC, at the 2008 Carolina Classic hosted by NCAA Tournament qualifier North Carolina from February 8-10. The Colonials will open the Classic with Kent State, featured on ESPN.com as a `sleeper' team on the national stage. GW also will take on the host UNC Tar Heels, East Carolina and North Carolina Central at the tournament.
After a two-week layoff, the Colonials will travel to UMBC for a doubleheader Tuesday, Feb. 26, before their home opener against Towson Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex.
GW will host its annual Colonial Classic March 1-2 as they will take on the Retrievers from UMBC, Army, and 2007 NCAA Tournament qualifier Canisius.
Bucknell visits the District on Sunday, March 9, for a doubleheader before the Colonials open their Atlantic 10 Conference schedule at La Salle Thursday, March 13.
For the fourth straight season, GW will take its spring break to Kissimmee, FL, to compete in the Rebel Spring Games from March 15-20. Teams and matchups will be announced at a future date.
Upon their return home, the Colonials will make the short trip to Bethesda, MD, to take on Georgetown Wednesday, March 26. The doubleheader against the Hoyas is sandwiched between A-10 road matchups against Saint Louis and St. Bonaventure.
Defending Atlantic 10 champion and postseason qualifier Massachusetts is the opponent for the Colonials' A-10 home opener April 4 and 5. The Colonials will host eight games in eight days against two other conference rivals ,in addition to a non-conference tilt against James Madison.
Four of GW's next six opponents are on the road with two games against non-conference opponents Mount St. Mary's and Maryland. The Colonials wrap up the regular season at home against Fordham Saturday, May 3.
Charlotte hosts the 2008 Atlantic 10 Tournament, scheduled from May 7-10 at the Phillips Softball Complex. The Colonials will aim to qualify for the second straight season as one of the top six teams for the double-elimination tournament.
