Volleyball Drops 3-0 Match at Xavier

CINCINNATI, OH -- The GW volleyball team dropped its second straight 3-0 decision, this time to Xavier in an A-10 Conference match Saturday night at XU's Cintas Center. The Musketeers prevailed by the scores, 30-27, 30-24, 30-19 in one hour, 45 minutes. The setback was GW's third straight overall and third straight in the A-10 dropping the Colonials to 10-12, 2-4 in the league.
Game one was close throughout as the teams traded leads five times and featured 11 ties, the last coming at 22-22 on a Xavier attack error. GW got kills from Janine Brown, Leah Hill, Liz Moult and Katie Zulandt but also committed four attack errors to give Xavier a 29-27 lead. The Musketeers won the game when Moult misfired from the service line.
Game two was nearly as close with four lead changes and 10 ties, the last at 14-14 on a GW kill by Hannah Stuart. Xavier then pulled away on a pair of kills by Jill Quayle for some breathing room before the Colonials closed to within one at 21-20 on a kill by Katie Butz. The Musketeers responded by scoring nine of the next 13 points to win, 30-24. Game three was all Xavier as the Musketeers raced out to a 12-3 lead and were never threatened en route to the 30-19 victory.
Xavier combined to hit .299 for the match including .405 in game three. The Colonials hit .148 as a team while committing 26 attack errors. GW managed a season-low two blocks while Xavier combined for eight total blocks.
The Colonials were again led by Brown whose 17 points and 16 kills was the only Colonial in double-figures. Moult tallied nine points on nine kills in 21 swings for a .333 hitting percentage while Hill added nine points on six kills and 11 digs and three service aces.
Xavier (18-6, 8-0 A-10) was led by Quayle's 13 points on 12 kills and two block assists. Jenni Horvath and Kelly Ruth contributed 11 and 10.5 points, respectively, for the Musketeers.
GW (10-12, 2-4 A-10) returns for a pair of A-10 matches beginning Friday against Duquesne (10-11, 2-4 A-10) in a 7:00 p.m. match at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Duquesne match is Dig for the Cure Night to raise awareness for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
