Volleyball Falls to No. 14 Dayton, 3-0

DAYTON, OH -- Playing its first nationally ranked opponent in more than three years, the GW volleyball team was overwhelmed by No. 14 Dayton, 3-0, in an A-10 Conference match Friday night in Ohio. The Flyers cruised by the scores, 30-18, 30-21, 30-25 in one hour, 25 minutes. GW's last match against a nationally ranked opponent came in the 2004 season-opener against No. 24 Utah. The win was Dayton's 20th straight, longest in Div. I.
Friday's match began with the Flyers breezing to a 30-18 victory after taking an 8-1 lead on four Flyer kills and four Colonials errors. UD hit .531 in game one and was never threatened. Game two began in similar fashion with the Flyers taking a 10-5 lead and maintaining a comfortable cushion throughout.
Game three was the most competitive and featured three lead changes and eight ties, hte last coming at 16-16 on a Dayton attack error. The Flyers separated themselves but putting together a 9-3 run for a 25-19 advantage and coasted to the 30-25 victory.
Dayton combined to hit .362 (58-16-116) for the match while the Colonials hit just .178 (32-14-101).
The Colonials were led by senior Janine Brown with 11.5 points on 10 kills while hitting .364 to go with 10 digs for her 17th double-double in 19 appearances this season. Unfortunately, she was the only Colonial in double-figure points, kills or digs. Sophomore Abby Syverson also was efficient on offense hitting .600 with six kills in 10 swings with no errors and two block assists for seven points. GW freshman Leah Hill had eight digs and a pair of service aces.
Dayton (20-0, 7-0 A-10) was led by Jamie-Lee Richards' 15 kills and Adrienne Green's 19 digs.
The loss was GW's eighth straight to UD spanning five years. The Colonials' last victory over the Flyers came on Nov. 22, 2002 in the semifinal round of the 2002 A-10 Tournament at Cincinnati.
GW (10-11, 2-3 A-10) concludes its two-match road trip on Saturday against Xavier (16-6, 6-0 A-10) in a 7:00 p.m. match at Cincinnati.
