WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington men's basketball coach Karl Hobbs earned career victory No. 100 Wednesday in his sixth season at the Washington, DC school. The Colonials defeated Fordham at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center to reach the milestone triumph. Hobbs became only the fourth GW men's coach to amass 100 career victories joining Bill Reinhart (319), Mike Jarvis (152) and Bob Tallent (102).
When asked after the game about his thoughts on reaching the milestone, Hobbs said, "I hadn't really thought about it because as a coach, I'm more concerned about the game itself. But obviously, I'm very pleased and happy to have 100 wins."
Hobbs' landmark 100th victory comes during GW's 100th anniversary season of men's basketball which began competing in 1906-07.
The victory over Fordham also marked the 20th straight home victory for the Colonials. Only five other teams in the country have longer home winning streaks, as of Jan. 3. The Colonials were one of eight Division I teams to go undefeated on their home court last season. GW posted a 15-0 mark at Smith Center in 2005-06 and have won their first five home games this season.
GW's next home game is Saturday, Jan. 6, against Marshall at 6:00 p.m. at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. Coincidentally, Marshall also was Hobbs' first opponent as GW's head coach. The Colonials rallied from a 19-point second-half deficit to defeat the Herd in the NABC Classic at Lexington, KY, in 2001. That game still stands as GW's largest come-from-behind victory under Hobbs.
