WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington softball team was picked to finish a program-best sixth in the 2007 Atlantic 10 Preseason poll, voted on by the league's head coaches. Massachusetts is expected to repeat as Atlantic 10 Champions, while Fordham, Charlotte, St. Bonaventure and Temple rounded out the top five.
First-year Head Coach Kim Staehle was pleasantly surprised with the preseason prediction. "I think that shows that the coaches respect the foundation that former coach JoAnne Ferguson established. Hopefully our team will step up to the challenge to compete and continue to build and surprise our conference members. We certainly have a very strong nucleus of players returning and our challenge will be to win as many of those A-10 games as possible. I am excited our conference championship has expanded to the top six teams making the tournament. Hopefully our ladies will take advantage of every opportunity to win games and place us back in Amherst in May to compete for that conference championship."
The Colonials who return 16 letter-winners including shortstop Elana Meyers open their 2007 season February 23-25 in Macon, GA at the Mercer Ramada Inn Classic with Mercer, Oakland University, and Austin Peay. GW will host Maryland-Baltimore County in their home opener on Tuesday, February 27 at 1:00 p.m.
