WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's basketball team improved one spot in both national polls, to No. 11 in Monday's Associated Press Top 25 and No. 13 in Tuesday's ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll.
GW (14-2, 3-0 A-10) won all three of its games last week and gained 52 points in the new AP poll. The Colonials received 573 points, two better than Purdue and 37 better than Baylor, which lost twice last week and fell four spots to No. 13. The No. 11 AP ranking matches the program's highest since beginning the 1992-93 campaign at No. 11. GW has improved in the Top 25 in seven of eight weeks since joining the rankings at No. 23 on Nov. 20.
GW also jumped one spot to No. 13 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll on Tuesday. The Colonials received 31 additional points and now have 403, also two better than the Boilermakers, but 16 behind the No. 12 Bears. It is the seventh time GW has advanced in the Coaches' Top 25 this season.
Senior Kenan Cole averaged 15.0 points on 53.1 percent shooting from the floor to lead GW to victories over Richmond, Fordham and Massachusetts last week. Cole scored a season-high 19 points in the Colonials 61-48 win over the Minutewomen on Sunday. That victory marked head coach Joe McKeown's 400th at GW. Sophomore Jessica Adair averaged 11.7 points and 6.3 boards last week, while twin sister Jazmine posted 8.3 points and 8.3 rebounds over the three-game span.
The Colonials host Rhode Island at the Smith Center on Thursday at 7:00 pm before embarking on a four-game road swing. GW begins that four-game stretch at Xavier on Sunday, Jan. 21, in a nationally-televised ESPN2 contest at 2:00 pm.
