AMHERST, MA -When the George Washington women's soccer team opened Atlantic 10 Conference play late this afternoon at Massachusetts, they brought with them the best non-conference record in school history. Unfortunately, the Minutewomen (7-2-0, 1-0-0) were not impressed. The Colonials (7-4-0, 0-1-0), who struggled offensively and failed to recover after allowing an early goal, fell to UMass 1-0. The loss snapped their three-game winning streak.
UMass scored the lone goal of the match and out shot GW, 17-4, including nine shots on goal. In the 14th minute, junior Britt Canfield beat keeper Amie Kern one-on-one to notch her fifth goal of the season. It was just the 12th goal allowed by Kern all season, and it would prove to be her only blemish of the day, as she went on to set a new career high by registering eight saves in the match. "Amie played the game of her life tonight," said Head Coach Tanya Vogel after the match.
The Colonials struggled significantly in the first half offensively, tallying zero shots. "We have to be able to compete from minute one," Vogel said. "In the second half, we made adjustments, and really decided that we wanted to play, and it definitely showed out on the field."
The Colonials had an opportunity to tie the game in the final minutes, but a shot by sophomore Meg Pyle landed harmlessly in the hands of UMass keeper Kristin Walker. For GW, it was only the third time this season that they have been shutout (the other two being road losses at Georgetown and JMU). The outcome improves Massachusetts's overall record against George Washington to 15-5-2. The Minutewomen, who have been receiving votes in the NSCAA/adidas national poll, entered the game ranked No. 6 regionally in SoccerBuzz.
"Right now, we feel very prepared and very focused for our game on Sunday. We're looking forward to our match at Rhode Island, and hopefully we come out of there with a win," Vogel said.
GW will look to earn their first A-10 Conference win on Sunday when they travel to Rhode Island, a team that they are 6-8-1 against all-time. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 1:00 p.m.
