Volleyball Outlasts Duquesne, 3-2

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The GW volleyball team snapped a five-match skid and hung on for a 3-2 victory over Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 Conference battle Friday night in Pittsburgh. The Colonials won by the scores, 30-25, 30-27, 27-30, 27-30, 15-10 in a two-hour, 27-minute marathon. It marked the 100th career victory for GW's seventh-year head coach, Jojit Coronel.
GW senior co-captain Juliene McLaughlin scored 28 points by slamming a match-high 28 kills and balanced that with a match-high 28 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Junior Janine Brown also had a monster night with 24 kills, 21 digs and a pair of block assists en route to 26 points.
DU's Amanda Haeg scored 25 points on 22 kills and four block assists and an ace to lead the Dukes. Haeg also had 19 digs on the evening. A trio of Dukes contributed 12 kills each, Jenni Gross, Lindsey Hess and Jessica Artman all had 12 kills with Gross and Artman each assisting on six blocks.
After escaping with narrow victories in the first two games, GW fell behind the Dukes in game three and managed to hit just.093 with 15 kills and 10 attack errors while the Dukes hit .167 with 17 kills and seven errors.
Duquesne won game four by the same score to set the stage for the decisive fifth game. After Duquesne took a 1-0 lead in game five, GW scored the next two points to set the tone. Duquesne tied the game at 4-4 on a kill by Haeg but the Colonials responded with a 4-0 run that included a pair of kills by Brown and a service ace by freshman Abby Syverson for an 8-4 advantage.
Duquesne got to within two at 12-10 on a kill by Hess that was followed by consecutive kills by Brown and McLaughlin to put GW in the driver's seat at 14-10. McLaughlin then put the match away with a kill from a set by senior setter Kaimana Lee for the Colonials' first A-10 victory of the year.
It marked the first A-10 win of the year for the Colonials who improved to 8-7, 1-2 in the A-10 while Duquesne dropped to 7-3, 1-2 A-10. The Colonials are now 1-1 in five-game matches this season.
Junior Kaimana Lee registered her season-high 61 assists, one shy of her career best.
For the match, DU recorded 17 total blocks to six for the Colonials. GW's defense, however, registered a season-high 114 digs. GW holds a 27-7 advantage in the all-time series with the Dukes dating back to 1977.
GW (8-7, 1-2 A-10) next travels to St. Louis Sunday for a noon match against the Billikens of Saint Louis University.
