WASHINGTON, DC -- Senior co-captain Juliene McLaughlin pounded a match-high 17 kills in leading GW past Fairleigh Dickinson, 30-22, 30-20, 30-23, Saturday night in the fourth match of the 2006 GW Volleyball Invitational. GW defeated Coppin State, 3-0, earlier Saturday at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center to run its record to a perfect 5-0 on the season.
After coasting to victories in the first two games, GW fell behind FDU early in game three and trailed 5-1 before getting untracked. GW managed to tie the game at 9-9 on an FDU attack error and went ahead on a kill by setter Jess Buche. The Colonials then distanced themselves on consecutive service aces by sophomore Liz Moult to go up 15-10. Another ace by Buche and the Knights called timeout to regroup.
FDU battled to within 22-16 on a kill by Megan Philbrick but the Colonials answered with a Moult kill and kept the Knights at arm's length the rest of the way.
Moult, playing in place of injured starter Janine Brown, had her best match as a Colonial with a career-high eight kills to go with her match-high 15 digs.
FDU's Elena Schmidt led the Knights with nine kills and had just one error to hit .320. Lauren Lombardo led the Knights with 11 digs.
As a team, GW combined to hit a robust .286 (46-14-112) compared to FDU's .129 (33-18-116). The Colonials also had more service aces (9) than service errors (8).
