Volleyball Falls to Wake in Five-Game Thriller, 3-2

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The George Washington volleyball team fell to Wake Forest, 3-1, Friday in the second match of the Black & Gold Challenge at Winston-Salem, NC. The Demon Deacons prevailed by the scores, 30-26, 19-30, 30-13, 20-30, 19-17, at Wake's Reynolds Gymnasium in what was by far GW's longest match of the season.
Sophomore Liz Moult played her best match as a Colonial leading the squad with 20 points on her career-high 18 kills while hitting. 427 with 16 digs and a pair of service aces. Moult, who earned a spot in the lineup when starter Janine Brown suffered an ankle injury in practice two weeks ago, has made the most of the opportunity. GW senior hitter Abba Greenleaf (14 points) and senior co-captain Juliene McLaughlin (13 points) each contributed 10 kills. North Carolina native Kelly Kabbes hit .357 on six kills and just one error in 14 attacks. The senior from Cary, NC, also assisted on three blocks. Setter Kaimana Lee assisted on 37 of the Colonials' 49 kills.
GW produced just 49 kills for the match compared to 80 kills for Wake. The Deacons committed 17 service errors and 36 hitting errors to keep the match as close as it was. GW,by comparison, committed just nine service errors and 19 attack errors. The Colonials tallied 11 total blocks to just four for the hosts. There were five ties and five lead changes in the decisive game five.
After trading victories through the first four games, Wake took charge early in game five racing out to a 4-0 lead before a service ace by GW's Maggie Wright put the Colonials on the scoreboard. The Deacons maintained a two-point lead much of the game until the Colonials tied that game at 13-13 on an attack error by Wake's Jessica Furlong. After a kill by Wake's Lauren Peterson and a kill by Greenleaf, the game was tied again at 14-14. The teams traded another set of points when a kill by WF's Shannon Homan gave the hosts a 16-15 margin.
GW's Moult answered with a kill to forge a 16-16 tie but Peterson came right back with a kill followed by a Wake service error to tie the game at 17-17. Furlong then took over and smashed consecutive kills to end the match.
GW (7-3) next faces Winthrop Saturday at 10:00 am in day two of the Black & Gold Challenge before taking on Davidson at 4:30 pm.
