WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington lacrosse team got goals from seven different players, including a game-high five from junior Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD), to breeze past visiting La Salle University, 16-8, Friday afternoon at GW's Mount Vernon Field in northwest Washington. The victory snapped a three-game slide for the Colonials who improved to 6-10 overall, 2-4 in the A-10 heading into Sunday's regular-season finale.
GW jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 14 minutes and were never threatened thereafter. The Colonials got a pair of goals from seniors Colleen Schmidt (Wantagh, NY) and Annie Howley (Baltimore, MD), and one goal each from Hostetler and freshman Meghan Cratty (Wilton, CT) in the six-goal barrage to open the game.
La Salle (5-12, 1-6) got on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal by Kristen Davis, her first of three scores on the afternoon, at the 14:52 mark of the half. GW closed out the first half with four more unanswered goals to take a commanding 10-1 lead into halftime.
After Hostetler opened the second half with her third goal of the game less than a minute in, La Salle's Maura Kenville scored the first of two straight Explorer goals of the game two minutes later. Kat Prokop's goal brought LU to within 11-3 on a free position goal.
Schmidt then scored her third goal on the day followed by a goal from LU's Emily Bonczek which was followed one minute later by another score from Schmidt. GW's Laura Wunk (Ellicott City, MD) got into the act with a goal after taking a quick pass from Schmidt to increase GW's lead to 14-4 with 11:42 remaining.
The Explorers scored four of the game's final six goals, a pair by Tiffany Grossi and two more by Davis to close out the scoring.
All three of GW's goalkeepers saw action with sophomore Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD) recording the win. Garman had four saves while junior goalkeeper Emily Fortunato (Farmingdale, NY) played nearly 10 minutes and sophomore Teddi Shihadeh (Villanova, PA) made a save in six minutes of action. LU goalkeeper Brittany Friedrich took the loss allowing 11 goals while making 13 saves in 47 minutes. LU's Chantelle McCormick made a pair of saves in nearly 13 minutes in the net. GW outshot La Salle, 38-21.
GW plays its final home game of the season this Sunday, April 30, when the Colonials host Massachusetts on `Senior Day' beginning at noon at the Mount Vernon Lacrosse Field (2100 Foxhall Road, NW). It will mark the final games for three GW seniors: Lauren Bower (Moorestown, NJ), Howley and Schmidt.
