Lacrosse Stumbles at Duquesne in OT, 12-11

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The George Washington lacrosse team suffered its second overtime loss of the season when they dropped a 12-11 decision to Duquesne Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh. GW (5-10, 1-4) was led by Kristin Karsch (Kennett Square, PA) with four goals and Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD) with a pair of scores. The Colonials went 0-2 on the road trip that began Friday with a 13-11 loss at St. Bonaventure and has damaged GW's hopes of qualifying for the A-10 lacrosse championship held this year at GW's Mount Vernon Field May 5-7.
The Colonials jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals by Colleen Schmidt (Wantagh, NY) and Annie Howley (Levittown, NY) before freshman Keri Drexel put the Dukes on the board with an assist from McNish at the 15:21 mark. George Washington hit free position goals in the 17th and 20th minutes for a 4-1 margin, but the Dukes answered back with scored from Mulford in the 23rd minute and Wood in the 25th minute for a 4-3 DU reach. Meghan Cratty's (Wilton, CT) free position goal at 28:48 ended the frame's scoring and gave the visiting Colonials a 5-3 cushion at the break.
The Dukes (10-4, 3-2) were led by senior Kelly Mulford with six goals, including the game-winning free position shot with :02 ticking in overtime.
Duquesne opened the second stanza with back-to-back goals in :57 seconds as Wood found the back of the cage at :43 and Mulford sailed an unassisted score off the draw at :57 for a 5-5 game. GW followed suit with two goals within a minute for a 7-5 advantage just 5:47 into play. Mulford then hit two unassisted goals at 9:32 and 9:51 for a 7-7 tie, but the Dukes would still not see a lead as Hostetler scored unassisted at 11:50 for an 8-7 edge. Mann started a three-goal drive for the Dukes taking the give from Gallagher in the 12th minute followed by Allison Smith's free position goal at 19:04 and an unassisted score from Mulford at 20:35 for a 10-8 Duquesne advantage. The Colonials never gave up and tied the score for the third time at 10-10 on a Karcsh score, but Wood gave the Dukes an 11-10 edge unassisted 27:47 into the period. Karcsh knotted the game and sent it into OT with a free position score with just :19 remaining in regulation.
Mulford hit a free position goal with :02 ticking in the first 3:00 period of overtime for a 12-11 edge that would secure the win after the second 3:00 overtime half went scoreless.
GW sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD) faced 42 shots and had 12 saves. DU goalkeeper Meredith Norris had eight saves in 66 minutes of action. GW is winless against Duquesne in six meetings.
GW next hosts La Salle this Friday, April 28, at 3:30 p.m. at GW's Mount Vernon Field (2100 Foxhall Rd., NW).
