Lacrosse Falls to No. 18 St. Bonaventure, 13-11

OLEAN, NY -- The George Washington women's lacrosse team started strong opening leads of 4-0 and 6-2 but couldn't hang on as No. 18 St. Bonaventure rallied for a 13-11 victory over the Colonials in an Atlantic 10 Conference game on Friday afternoon at St. Bonaventure. The loss dropped GW to 5-9 overall, 1-3 in the A-10 while the Bonnies improved to 13-1, 4-1. It marked GW's second straight A-10 loss after leading 4-0 to begin the contest.
The Colonials took charge right away scoring four unanswered goals by four different players before St. Bonaventure answered with a pair of goals to cut the deficit to 4-2 at the 15:12 mark of the first half.
GW senior Annie Howley (Levittown, NY) scored an unassisted goal less than three minutes into the game followed less than two minutes later by a goal from freshman Megan Cratty (Wilton, CT). Junior Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD) then found the net three minutes later followed by a Colleen Schmidt (Wantagh, NY) goal two minutes after that.
St. Bonaventure got on the scoreboard at the 16:35 mark on a pair of free position goals from Robin Mason and Katie Hurley to cut GW's lead to 4-2. Hostetler scored her second goal three minutes later followed almost immediately by a goal from GW sophomore Laura Wunk (Ellicott City, MD) to boost GW's lead to 6-2 at the 11:27 mark. After a pair of SBU goals, Cratty struck for the second time of the first period to give GW a 7-4 advantage at halftime.
The Bonnies dominated the beginning of the second half by reeling off five straight goals to take a 9-7 lead. Hostetler stopped the string with an unassisted goal at the 13:23 mark but SBU's Nicole Motondo answered with a goal less than two minutes later. Howley scored her second goal of the afternoon to close the gap to 10-9 before two more Bonnie goals opened a 12-9 SBU lead.
Hostetler then scored her fourth goal of the day at the 5:53 mark followed by a goal from sophomore Kristin Karcsh (Kennett Square, PA) to bring GW within one at 12-11. SBU's Hurley completed the scoring after taking a pass from Brenna Houghton and found the net with just 32 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
GW goalkeeper Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD) went the distance making 17 saves while facing 40 St. Bonaventure shots. SBU goalies Eileen Gagnon and Eboni Preston each played a half and each recorded five saves while facing 27 GW shots.
GW next travels directly to Pittsburgh to face Duquesne in a must-win game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Dukes handed St. Bonaventure its only loss of the season on April 18.
