RICHMOND, VA - George Washington University (2-6) scored four times with two outs in the seventh inning to rally from a 3-1 deficit and defeat Virginia Commonwealth University (5-5) 7-3 Saturday afternoon at The Diamond.
After the first two batters were retired in the seventh, the Colonials posted consecutive walks and then used an RBI single from shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) and a two-run double from left fielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) to take a 4-3 lead.
Third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains) followed with a base hit that knocked in another run and gave GW a 5-3 advantage.
Colonials' starter LHP Dan Pfau (1-1) allowed two earned runs and struck out eight in 6.0 innings to pick up his first win of the season. RHP Derek Haese (Littleton, CO / Dakota Ridge / UC San Diego) threw three shutout innings to earn his first collegiate save.
Rams' starter RHP John Leonard lasted four innings and yielded just one run. RHP Bill Wieland (0-1) came on in the fifth for VCU and was victimized in GW's seventh inning rally.
Designated hitter Andrew Haberern (Emmaus, PA / Emmaus / Trinity College) staked the Colonials to a 1-0 third inning lead with a solo home run.
After leading off the bottom of the fifth inning with a triple, VCU first baseman Jared Bolden came around to score on right fielder Trai Harris' single to tie the game, 1-1.
The Rams took a 3-1 lead an inning later on a solo home run from second baseman Scott Sizemore (1) and a manufactured run by Bolden.
With a 5-3 eighth inning lead, the Colonials added two more in the eighth inning on a RBI sacrifice fly from Haberern and a RBI single from first baseman Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA / North Forsyth) to extend their lead to 7-3.
With the win GW evens the series at a game a piece and ends a six-game losing streak, its longest since 1999.
The two teams play the rubber match Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
The Colonials will start RHP Josh Wilkie (1-1, 5.25 ERA) and the Rams will go with RHP Cody Eppley (1-1, 3.00 ERA).
