GW Lacrosse Crushes California, 18-6

WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington women's lacrosse team took charge early and coasted to an impressive 18-6 victory over visiting California Wednesday afternoon at GW's Mount Vernon Field. The Colonials jumped on the Golden Bears early for a 10-3 lead in the first half and outscored Cal, 8-3, in the second half and were never threatened. It marked GW's first victory in three meetings with Cal (4-6).
GW senior attacker Colleen Schmidt (Wantagh, NY) paced the Colonials' attack with her career-high five goals and added an assist for six points on the afternoon. Junior Laura Hostetler (Ellicott City, MD) added four goals and a pair of assists.
GW sophomore Kristin Karcsh (Kennett Square, PA) scored the first goal of the game four minutes in followed just threee minutes later by a unassisted goal from Schmidt. Cal responded with a pair of goals, one each from Laura Cavallo and Liz Reifsnyder top knot the game at 2-2 at the 19:11 mark. GW reeled off the next five goals, two by Schmidt and one each from Lauren Bower (Moorestown, NJ) and Katherine Sampson (Larchmont, NY), to give GW a commanding 7-2 lead midway through the first half.
Cal's Danni Zuralow, a sophomore from Fairfax's Robinson High School, scored on a free position shot to pull within 7-3 but the Colonials scored the final three goals of the half.
GW (4-6) opened the second half with a pair of goals, one from senior Annie Howley (Levittown, NY) five minutes in and another from Sampson two minutes later for a 12-3 bulge. Cal's Madeleine Dale took a pass from Leanne Zilioli and neeted a goal at the 21:21 mark before Karcsh answered with her third goal less than a minute later.
The Bear's Cavallo sandwiched a pair of goals around four Colonials' goals before Schmidt ended the scoring with a goal with just 15 seconds left. The 18 goals was a season-high for GW which is averaging 10.9 goals per game through the first 10 games.
GW sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD/Friends School) went the distance and made 12 saves after facing 22 Cal shots. Cal played both of its goalkeepers with starter Hilary Lynch giving way to Morgan Dyson in the second half.
GW's next game will be the Atlantic 10 Conference opener this Sunday, April 2 when the Colonials host No. 9 Richmond in a 1:00 p.m. game at GW's Mount Vernon Field, located at 2100 Foxhall Road in northwest Washington.
