BRONX, NY -- The George Washington volleyball team had its five-match winning streak snapped with a 3-1 loss at Fordham's Rose hill Gym Sunday afternoon but its shot at a spot in the six-team A-10 Tournament is still very much alive. Fordham defeated GW by the scores: 33-31, 27-30, 30-23, 30-28 to split the regular-season series. GW defeated the Rams on Oct. 20 in Washington. GW (13-11, 5-6 A-10) and Fordham (19-14, 5-7 A-10) are battling for the sixth and final berth in the A-10 Championship Tournament to be held Nov. 17-19 at Dayton, OH.
GW senior co-captain Juliene McLaughlin paced the Colonials' attack with 14 kills and a match-high 21 digs for her team-leading 13th double-double of the season. Freshman Katie Butz had her most productive match as a collegian by hitting .583 on nine kills in 12 attacks with just two errors and a pair of block assists. Kelly Kabbes hit .278 with eight kills and six block assists.
Neither team was particularly efficient on offense with the Colonials managing to hit .127 while committing 36 attack errors while Fordham hit .199 with 25 miscues. The Rams hit their stride in the decisive fourth game by hitting .395 compared to .233 for the Colonials.
Both teams also struggled from the service line with GW serving 16 errors to cancel out its seven aces and the Rams giving away 18 points of service errors while recording just four aces.
Fordham's blocking was the difference in the match as the Rams terminated 15 GW attacks while GW was able to thwart eight Fordham attacks.
Fordham's Kealia Ieremia narrowly missed her second straight triple-double with 10 kills, 44 assists and eight digs while Marija Markovic added 13 kills and 10 blocks.
GW controls its own destiny and can lock up the final slot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament by winning its final two matches, both at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center, against La Salle Nov. 10 and against Temple on Nov. 11. GW swept the Explorers on Oct. 14 in Philadelphia but fell to Temple the day before, 3-1, and has not beaten the Owls since 1998. Fordham has one remaining A-10 match on Nov. 11 at Rhode Island.
