Volleyball Falls to Charlotte, 3-1

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The George Washington volleyball team had three players register double-figure kills but it wasn't enough as it fell to Charlotte, 3-1, Saturday night in an A-10 match at Charlotte's Halton Arena. UNCC won by the scores 33-35, 30-15, 30-16, 30-25.
GW senior Juliene McLaughlin and junior Janine Brown each had a team-high 15 kills while Abba Greenleaf added 12 kills, 11 digs and her career-high six blocks (one solo, five assists). Kaimana Lee assisted on 43 of GW's 60 kills and added a team-high 14 digs.
As a team, Charlotte hit .310 (75-21-174) for the match compared to .133 (60-34-196) for GW.
Charlotte (13-8, 2-3 A-10) was led by freshman Cori Dayton's 27 kills and Carly Romberg's match-high 27 digs.
Game one was a wild affair that featured 12 lead changes and 12 ties. GW finally prevailed on a pair of Janine Brown kills and and ended on a Cori Dayton attack error giving GW the 35-33 win.
In game two, the 49ers came out strong and were hitting on all cylinders and took a 5-1 lead. GW never got closer than five points down as Charlotte cruised to the 30-15 victory.
Game three had GW taking the early 7-4 advantage before Charlotte rallied for 11 straight points for a 15-7 lead and pulled away for an easy 30-16 triumph. The 49ers were nearly flawless offensively hitting .600 with 21 kills and just three errors for the game.
Game four was tied at 13-13 before the 49ers again reeled off four straight points for a 17-13 advantage. GW was able to tied the game at 24-24 before committing three errors combined with a Charlotte kill to surrender four straight points.
The Colonials misfired on 34 attacks and committed six service errors and a ball-handling error to give away 41 points on the night.
GW (8-9, 1-4 A-10) next plays at Temple Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. followed by a match at La Salle Saturday in Philadelphia beginning at 5 p.m.
