Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight Match, Sweeps UMES, 3-0

PRINCESS ANNE, MD -- GW junior Janine Brown paced the Colonials with 22.5 points on a match-high 20 kills as George Washington took a three-game sweep from Maryland-Eastern Shore Friday at the Hytche Center. The Colonials won by the scores 30-19, 31-29, 30-14. The triumph was GW's fourth straight.
Brown was magnificent hitting .500 with no attack errors in 40 swings and a pair of service aces. Senior Kelly Kabbes was even more efficient hitting .556 with 12 kills in 18 attacks while committing just two errors en route to a 13-point night. Senior Juliene McLaughlin was the only other Colonial in double-figure kills with 11 and added a match-high 13 digs for her team-leading 12th double-double of the season.
GW hit a season-high .379 as a team committing just 11 errors in 124 attacks. UMES hit a strong .230 but managed to slam just 38 kills, 20 fewer than GW's 58 total kills.
UMES (14-13) was led by Caylin Woodward's 12.5 points on 11 kills and two blocks while hitting .400. The Lady Hawks' Melanie Durimel matched Woodward with 11 kills and had 11.5 points.
After coasting to the 30-19 victory in game one, game two proved to be a challenge that featured eight ties and three lead changes. UMES took an 11-4 lead to start the second game, its largest of the match. A kill by McLaughlin with the Colonials trailing 12-7 spurred a 12-5 GW run, however, and allowed the Colonials to tie the game at 16-16. The teams traded points and were tied at 29-29 on a Woodward kill. A Lady Hawk attack error put the Colonials up, 30-29, before A-10 co-Rookie of the Week Abby Syverson pounded the game-winner.
Game three was anticlimactic as the Colonials built a 9-2 lead at the outset and was never threatened on the way to an easy 30-14 triumph. The victory kept GW undefeated against UMES in five meetings.
GW (12-10, 4-5 A-10) returns to Washington to host Charlotte an Atlantic 10 Conference match Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center.
