DAYTON, OH -The difficulties of playing on the road continued for the George Washington women's soccer team late Friday night, as they fell to Dayton 1-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Colonials surrendered an early goal and never recovered and are now 2-6-0 this season when playing away from Mount Vernon Field. The loss, just the fifth time GW has been shutout this season, drops the Colonials to 9-8-0 overall, and 2-5-0 in the conference.
In first half, Dayton out shot George Washington 10-1 (and 24-8 in the game) and tallied the only goal of the match in the 28th minute. Amanda Gallow gathered a rebound left in front of the net and managed to sneak it past the keeper for her third goal of the season. Despite their best efforts, including seven second half shots, GW never managed to find the back of the net.
The Colonials had a chance to tie the match because of great play by red shirt sophomore keeper Amie Kern, who registered a career-high 10 saves against Dayton. "Amie kept us in the game the whole night," said Head Coach Tanya Vogel. "She really made some great saves back there."
The only two seniors on the team, Shari Taylor and Molly Eckert, once again paced the defense and helped to keep GW within striking distance. Vogel also got great effort from the forwards, who created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the night. In particular, sophomore Meg Pyle recorded four shots on goal.
"This is probably the first game this season that we've played two great halves of soccer. And it's definitely exciting that the team is getting better. I know the team will come out on fire on Sunday."
George Washington will play its final match away from home on Sunday, at Xavier. The game is set for a 1:00 p.m. start time.
