Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision at Temple

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- There was no brotherly love in Philadelphia Friday night as the George Washington volleyball team fell to Temple, 3-1, at TU's McGonigle Hall. Temple won by the scores 30-19, 30-24, 28-30, 30-21.
GW junior Janine Brown led the Colonials with 16 points on 13 kills and three service aces but the Owls overpowered GW with 70 kills and a .323 team hitting percentage. Brown added a team-high 19 digs for her fifth double-double in nine matches.
Temple committed just two attack errors in the first two games in posting team attack percentages of .417 in game one and .472 in game two. GW won game three despite posting a .106 team attack percentage compared to Temple's .146 percentage. After committing just two errors in the first two games, the Owls imploded for 10 misfires in game three.
Temple (11-10, 4-3 A-10) was led by Yue Liu's 25.5 points on 22 kills, five block assists and service ace while hitting .315. The Owls' Patricia Vernon was even more efficient hitting .519 with 16 kills in 27 swings while committing just two errors. Ying Sun Ling was nearly flawless with 12 kills and just one error for a .440 hitting percentage on the evening.
GW freshman Abby Syverson had the most solid night for the Colonials scoring 12.5 points while hitting .318 with 10 kills and five block assists. Senior setter Kaimana Lee led GW with 24 assists while back-up setter Jess Buche came off the bench to assist on 12 kills.
It marked GW's third straight A-10 loss and the 17th straight meeting won by the Owls. GW's last victory over Temple came late in the 1998 season when some of the current Colonials were matriculating in elementary school. GW will have another crack at defeating Temple this season when the Owls visit Charles E. Smith Athletic Center in the final regular-season match on Nov. 11.
GW (8-10, 1-5 A-10) remains in Philadelphia for an Atlantic 10 Conference match at La Salle Saturday beginning at 5:00 p.m. at LU's Tom Gola Arena.
