Men Win Swimming Competition at Potomac Relays, Women Sixth

Washington, DC - The George Washington University men's and women's swimming and diving teams kicked off their 2006-07 season with the men taking first for the third consecutive year, and the women sixth, in the Potomac Relays hosted by American University.
Sophomore David Zenk led the men as a member of all four first place relay teams for the Colonials. Freshman Emily Leik and Cissey Ye led the women's squad in their collegiate debuts taking fourth in the 1000 Yard Freestyle Relay.
Zenk along with freshman Rick Rogers, and seniors Jeff Cohn and Dan Mahoney got the Colonials off to a good start taking first in the 500 Freestyle Relay in 4:18.88 defeating the next finisher by almost six seconds. Freshman Stephen CosmeMahoney, Cohn and Zenk ran away from the competition in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay in 7:13.54. Freshman Cascade Tuholske, juniorJonathan Sabin and Zenk notched the Colonials third victory of the night in the 300 yard backstroke in 2:40.14. Sophomore Tom Pullen, Tuholske, Sabin and Zenk capped off the night with a dominant performance in the 400 Yard Medley Relay in 3:44.75.
Leik and Ye took fourth in the 1000 Yard Freestyle Relay in 10:59.76, the best finish for any women's relay on the night. Leik and Ye along with junior Molly Moss and sophomore Ariana Berdini took fifth in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay in 8:18.68. Ye also anchored the 500 Yard Freestyle Relay to a fifth place finish in 4:58.32 along with senior Shannon Ma and sophomores Laura Myers and Jessica Miga. Leik combined with Berdini, Ma, and Myers, took fifth in the 200 Yard Medley Relay clocking in at 1:54.36.
The men who finished no lower than fourth in any relay also took second in three events: 1000 Yard Freestyle Relay, 300 Yard Breaststroke Relay and 200 Yard Medley Relay. Mahoney and Cohn took second in the 1000 Yard Freestyle Relay clocking in at 10:01.84. Junior Mark DeSimone, sophomore Andy Farrell and Rogers took second in the 300 Yard Breaststroke Relay in 3:10.91. Sabin, Rogers, Tuholske and Cohn combined for a 1:40.90 time in the 200 Yard Medley Relay.
The women 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Luciana Maggiolo, Ma, Miga and Myers took fifth in 1:43.75. The 300-yard breaststroke relay team of sophomore Lauren Fuchs, Myers and Berdini also took fifth in 3:37.51.
The diving competition was held earlier today at Georgetown University, with American University taking the men's and Georgetown the women's competition.
The Colonials are back in action tomorrow as they compete in a quad meet against Navy, Catholic and the host Loyola at 12:00 p.m.
