HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Danilo Pinnock scored 15 of his 21 points after halftime and No. 20 George Washington rallied to beat Marshall 79-73 in overtime Saturday night.
Carl Elliott added 18 points before fouling out on the first possession of overtime for George Washington (10-1). Maureece Rice and Pops Mensah-Bonsu had 15 points apiece. Only six players scored for the Colonials.
Mark Patton led Marshall (6-6) with 21 points before also fouling out. Markel Humphrey had a career-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Ross added 11 points.
Just three days after George Washington showed patience and poise against Temple's matchup zone in a double-digit victory, the Colonials had to scrap against a Marshall team picked to finish last in its inaugural season in Conference USA.
George Washington was held to one field goal over an eight-minute span of the second half and Marshall went on an 14-2 run for a 51-39 lead with 7:30 left.
Pinnock then scored eight points during a 16-6 run, including a steal and dunk to bring the Colonials within 57-56.
Elliott hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 64, but he then fouled Mark Dorris. The Marshall freshman missed both free throws to send the game into overtime.
Patton's 3-point play pulled Marshall within 70-69 with 1:51 left in overtime, but the Thundering Herd quickly lost their patience. After the teams traded baskets, George Washington attempted seven foul shots in a 14-second span. The Colonials scored six straight points, four on free throws, to seal the win.
