Colonials In Hunt For DC College Cup Title

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW men's soccer team (1-0-1) picked up its first victory of the 2005 season, beating Howard, 3-0, in its final match of DC College Cup on Sunday, Sept. 4 at North Kehoe Field on the campus of Georgetown University. The Colonials are in position to win their first DC College Cup crown, pending the outcome of the tournament's final match between Georgetown and American.
If the Hoyas defeat American they will win the tournament championship. If American wins, the championship will be decided by goal differential between the Eagles and the Colonials. If the final game ends in a tie, goal differential between the Hoyas and Colonials will be used to determine the 2005 DC College Cup champion.
Against Howard (0-2-0), the Colonials controlled the match from the outset and never let up, out-shooting the Bison, 29-7. Junior Joseph Siegel scored 5 minutes and 10 seconds into the match to give GW a 1-0 lead. Sophomores Greg McKay and Joachim Walker registered assists on the play. The helper was Walker's first career point.
In the second half, senior Steve Brown out-dueled a Bison defender to set up GW's second goal. Brown took the ball away Arlen Gerrett then slipped a pass to classmate Andre Chapman, who beat Howard keeper Jason Williams with a blast from the top of the arc to increase the Colonials margin to 2-0. Brown's assist was the 17th of his career, moving him into a tie with Mario Lone and Paul Boulad for seventh on the Colonials' career assists chart.
Senior captain Ben Mortimer salted the match away when he found the back of the net at 76:05. Mortimer's tally was the result of a free kick taken by sophomore David McConaghay. McConaghay served the ball into the box, where it was touched by sophomore Thomas Stuber over to Mortimer for the score. McConaghay notched an assist on the play for his first collegiate point.
Senior goalkeeper Derek Biss started in goal for the Colonials and played 79 minutes and 37 seconds before being replaced by sophomore Greg Yahr. Yahr played the final 10:23 and made one save.
Howard's Brian Mapp led the Bison with two shots and Howard keeper Jason Williams played all 90 minutes in the match and made five saves.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday, Sept. 11 when they play at Delaware at 1:00 p.m. The contest will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
