GW Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Defeat To Towson

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University men's soccer team (3-1-1) lost its first game of the season Wednesday afternoon, falling to Towson University (5-1-0) 1-0 in the Colonials' home opener at Mount Vernon.
Trailing 1-0 in the game's final minute, Colonials' head coach George Lidster ordered goalkeeper Derek Biss (Pittsfield, MA/St. Joseph's/Northfield Mt. Hermon) to leave his post and join the offense in pressing for a game-tying goal.
The move almost paid off as with 15 seconds remaining Biss chased down a loose ball five-yards in front of the Tigers' goal and fired-off a shot that was barely deflected by goalie Zak Thompson.
After playing to a scoreless first half, Towson sophomore Drew Van Acker received a pass from sophomore Pat Healey a few feet in front of GW's net and knocked it in (1) for the eventual game-winning goal in the 61st minute.
Eight different Colonials got off at least one shot in the contest including junior Arturo Pedroso (Coral Gables, FL/Ransom Everglades School/Holy Cross) who had three off the bench.
Overall the team recorded 13 shots in the game.
Healey provided five of Towson's nine shots.
Thompson recorded four saves while notching his fourth shutout of the young season.
Biss made three stops in the defeat.
GW's next match is Saturday when they host Rider at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. Game time is 1:00 PM.
