WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington volleyball team earned a bittersweet victory Saturday afternoon over Delaware State. As much as the Colonials needed the victory, they had to face an old friend and former Colonial in Hornets' coach Renee Arnold (`01). Arnold played for the Colonials from 1997 through 2000 and, on Saturday, was on the other bench for the fourth match of the GW Volleyball Invitational at GW's Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. GW triumphed over Arnold's Hornets, 30-20, 30-13, 30-15.
Earlier Saturday, Towson swept Iona, 3-0 in the tournament's opening match.
GW coach Jojit Coronel, who coached Arnold during her last two seasons at GW, used all 16 players on his roster and had all four of his freshmen in for much of game three. Sophomore Janine Brown was the only Colonial in double figure kills with 10. Both Jessica Vesey and Kaimana Lee shared the team digs lead with nine each.
The Colonials hit a season-high .322 with 36 kills compared to .009 for Delaware State (29 kills) in the one-hour, 11-minute match. The Hornets committed 28 hitting errors, 11 service errors and three ball-handling errors to give away 42 points to the Colonials.
Delaware State's Kinga Muszynski led the Hornets with 10 kills and added 11 digs while teammate Venecia Smith added 13 digs. DSU's Marissa Brady added seven kills.
The Colonials (2-1) next face Towson (3-1) Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the tournament finale at Smith Center. Towson plays Iona (0-1) at noon Saturday and the Delaware State-Iona match takes place at 5:00 p.m.
