WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington's men's basketball games will be announced by veteran play-by-play announcer Byron Kerr, GW Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz has announced. Kerr replaces longtime GW announcer, Larry Michael, who recently accepted a full-time position with the Washington Redskins as the team's radio play-by-play announcer and executive producer for Redskins TV among other duties.
"We are extremely excited about Byron joining our broadcast team," Kvancz said. "His experience and knowledge of college basketball, both locally and nationally, will benefit our fans, alumni and listeners throughout the Washington area."
"I am honored to join the George Washington family," Kerr said. "With their impressive lineup, it will be a thrill to call the games for what looks to be another exciting and successful season of Colonials basketball."
Kerr is an award winning midday sports anchor for WTOP Radio and serves as the Metro Networks Sports Director for Washington, DC. Kerr also has spent the past 10 years as the voice of George Mason basketball in nearby Fairfax, VA, and is also the voice of the WNBA Washington Mystics. He has called games for the NBA Washington Wizards, college football and basketball games nationally on Westwood One and MLS Soccer for D.C. United. Last March, Kerr was the play-by-play voice for Westwood One's national radio coverage of the 2005 NCAA Women's Tournament's Kansas City Regional Final.
GW games are broadcast on WMET Radio (1160 AM) which has a 50,000-watt signal that can be heard throughout the metropolitan area. WMET has an illustrious history in the Nation's Capital having broadcasted DC United soccer as well as Potomac Cannons and Frederick Keys baseball, in addition to more than 17 years as a Talk/News radio station.
GW games also will continue to be carried by WAGE Radio (1200 AM) of Leesburg, VA, as part of the Colonials Basketball Network.
The Colonials have been ranked as high as No. 11 in the nation by CBS SportsLine.com and 15th by Street & Smith's College Basketball Yearbook.
The first game scheduled for broadcast will be the GW-Augusta State preseason exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 2:00 pm from Charles E. Smith Athletic Center in Washington, DC.
