WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington has announced its women's basketball schedule for the 2005-06 season, which will begin on Friday, Nov. 18, when Virginia comes to Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Colonials are then off to the Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam Tournament to face Purdue Nov. 25 and either Texas or South Carolina the following day.
GW will play at least two games which will be televised by the Atlantic 10 Television Network. A-10 TV reaches more than 20 million homes. The network will air GW's home games against Xavier on Jan. 15 and Richmond on Feb. 19. The Colonials could play as many as four TV games if they advance to the final of the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which will be telecast by ESPN2. A-10 TV will air the two semifinal round games of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
The Colonials will play a minimum of 14 games against teams that earned bids to the postseason last year. Opponents who made the 2005 NCAA Tournament opponents include Final Four participant Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina State, Purdue, Richmond and Temple, while five other opponents participated in the 2005 WNIT (Charlotte, Maine, SMU, Villanova and Xavier). The non-conference portion of the schedule is highlighted by home matchups with NCAA Tournament participants Virginia (Nov. 18), Tennessee (Dec. 7) and Temple (Jan. 11) while going on the road to face North Carolina State (Dec. 30). The GW-Maine game is part of a doubleheader with the GW men's team, which will host Maryland-Eastern Shore that same afternoon.
Also, as part of their non-conference slate, the Colonials will travel to Philadelphia for a game with Big East power Villanova on Dec. 1.
The Atlantic 10 Conference adds two new members this year in Charlotte and Saint Louis. Gone is the East-West Division format of the last 10 years in favor of one 14-team league. Under the new format, GW will play a home-and-home series against Richmond, Temple and Xavier in 2005-06. The Colonials will face the other A-10 teams just once with home games against Charlotte, Dayton, Fordham, La Salle and Saint Louis. GW will travel to Duquesne, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Saint Joseph's and St. Bonaventure in 2005-06 with those teams coming to Charles E. Smith Athletic Center in 2006-07.
Head Coach Joe McKeown returns four starters and four other letterwinners from a squad that posted a 23-9 record a year ago and advanced to the second round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Leading the way is senior forward Jessica Simmonds who earned Second-Team Atlantic 10 All-Conference accolades last season.
