FAIRFAX, VA - Goals from sophomore Joachim Walker (Odenton, MD/Mount St. Joseph) (1) and junior Arturo Pedroso (Coral Gables, FL/Ransom Everglades School/Holy Cross) (2) led the George Washington University men's soccer team (3-0-1) to a 2-1 victory Saturday night over George Mason University (2-3) at George Mason Stadium.
The Colonials got things going early when Walker took a pass from senior Trevor Martin (Chevy Chase, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and lifted a high floater into the top right corner of the Patriots' goal to put GW ahead 1-0.
The goal was Walker's first of his collegiate career.
The Colonials held their lead until the 41st minute as Mason junior Francis McCardle evened the score at 1-1 when his header from five yards out, off of a pass from senior Karim Manneh, found its way into the lower right corner of the net.
The game remained tied at 1 until the 70th minute when Pedroso received a pass from sophomore Greg McKay (Brookeville, MD/Sherwood) and weaved through the Patriot defense from the top of the box to fire a shot that sailed into the net as the game-winner, giving the Colonials the 2-1 win.
GW was outshot 18-8 but goalkeeper Derek Biss (Pittsfield, MA/St. Joseph's/Northfield Mt. Hermon) made seven saves to preserve the win and keep the Colonials undefeated.
GW returns to action in its home opener Wednesday when they face Towson at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. Game time is 3:00 PM.
