CINCINNATI, OH -- The GW volleyball team came close but fell in the closest match of the season, 3-2, to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Thursday night in the University of Cincinnati's State Farm Bearcat Invitational. UWM won by the scores, 30-28, 30-26, 19-30, 30-32, 16-14, in a marathon battle that consumed two hours, 26 minutes.
GW junior Kelly Kabbes and sophomore Janine Brown paced the Colonials' offense with 15 kills each while senior Lindsey Vernand added 12 kills and five block assists. Brown added her season-high 22 digs for her third double-double of the season. Jessica Vesey led the team with 26 digs while.
The Colonials had 10 fewer kills than the Panthers but committed 15 fewer hitting errors as well for a .153 hitting percentage (66-35-203) compared to .103 (76-50-253) for UWM.
The Panthers' Becky Peters set a school record with 41 digs while Cheryl Hegeman recorded 19 kills and six block assists.
GW had late leads in all five games of the match. After losing the first two game by a total of six points, GW roared back to dominate the Panthers in game three, 30-19. GW built a 15-9 lead on a UWM error and eventually extended it to 22-15 on another Panther error.
In game four, GW grabbed a game-point opportunity at 29-22 but the Panthers scored the next seven points to tie at 29-29. GW persevered and pulled out the 32-30 victory.
GW took a 13-11 lead in the decisive fifth game before UWM rallied to tie the frame twice and then recorded a pair of blocks to get the victory.
GW (2-6) next takes on the host Bearcats of Cincinnati Friday at noon before concluding the tournament with a 5 pm match against Jacksonville (AL) State.
