Golf's Brian Carroll Finishes 8th at Illinois Amateur

BLOOMINGTON, IL -- George Washington's Brian Carroll (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) shot an even-par 71 in the final round to tie for eighth place at the 2005 Illinois State Amateur, Aug. 9-11 at the 6,830-yard, par-71 Crestwicke Country Club in Bloomington,IL. The Illinois native shot rounds of 70, 68, 70, 71 for a total of 5-under-par 279.
Carroll birdied 16 holes in the tournament, including five during the second round to stay among the leaders.
On July 19th, Carroll shot a 137 at the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying tournament at Bristlecone Pines Golf Club in Hartland, Wisconsin. The 2005 U.S. Amateur starts on August 22nd at legendary Merion County Club outside Philadelphia, PA.
Carroll played in the U.S. Amateur Public Links earlier this summer and missed the cut by a shot. Last year he played in the U.S. Amateur at Winged Foot Country Club and missed the cut by a shot.
The Colonials' co-captain, Carroll was named the 2005 Atlantic 10 Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for men's golf. He competed in 14 tournaments during the 2004-05 season, placing among the top 10 seven times, including four second-place finishes. He also had three top-20 finishes. He led GW with a 74.59 stroke average over 30.5 rounds. He matched his season low round of 70 three times, including one at the Princeton Invitational to help George Washington to the team title.
