WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's basketball team's road to the Final Four in Indianapolis, IN will begin on Sunday, March 20 in Chapel Hill, NC. The Colonials earned the ninth seed in the Tempe Regional and will take on the No. 8 seed Mississippi in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship at the Dean E. Smith Center.
"We're excited to be in field," said Coach Joe McKeown "To get an at-large bid really shows that the committee noticed what we accomplished this year, getting to the A-10 Tournament final and playing a national schedule. I'm also excited for our fans. This is the first time in a while we've been relatively close to home for the first round, so it will be easier for them to get to the game."
The Colonials are making their 12th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. They are 12-11 all-time in NCAA Tournament play and have advanced to the second round of the championship in nine of their 11 previous trips. GW advanced to the Sweet 16 in 1995 and reached the Elite Eight in 1997, the best showing in school history.
Sunday's meeting will be the first time the Lady Rebels and Colonials have ever squared off on the hardwood. Mississippi is 19-10 overall and was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament by Georgia. Armintie Price is the Lady Rebels' top offensive threat. She is averaging 17.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per outing.
"They are tough team," said McKeown. "They've flown under the radar a little bit this season, like we have. I think it will be a great matchup."
GW has won nine of its last 10 games and advanced to the championship game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament before losing to No. 16 Temple in the final on March 7.
