PHILADELPHIA, PA - Senior All-America candidate Anna Montañana was selected the Atlantic 10's co-Player of the Week and freshman Kimberly Beck was named the league's Rookie of the Week for the sixth time on Sunday, Feb. 20. It was the third Player of the Week Award for Montañana, who shared this week's honor with Dayton's Cara Wright.
Montañana averaged 23.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in GW's wins over Richmond on Feb. 13 and Saint Joseph's on Feb. 17. She also averaged 5.0 assists in the two games. Montañana scored a then-career-high 26 points at Saint Joseph's and grabbed 12 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the year. Against the Hawks, Montanana secured the win for GW by sinking four free throws in the final 1:20. The 6-1 forward increased her personal-best point total with 27 against Xavier on Feb. 20 to lead the Colonials to a 75-66 overtime victory, helping GW to a share of first place in the A-10 West.
Beck broke the GW freshman record for assists (which had stood since 1981-82) with seven against Saint Joseph's and her season total now stands at 133, the 12-highest single-season total in GW history. She averaged 8.5 points, 6.0 assists, and 3.5 steals per game last week. Beck's six Rookie of the Week Awards is the most by any league freshman this season.
The Colonials will wrap up the regular season with home games versus Duquesne on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m. and La Salle on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 2:00 p.m.
