PHILADELPHIA, PA -- GW sophomore Janine Brown (Jacksonville, FL) averaged 5.50 kills and 4.3 digs in two 3-0 sweeps by George Washington over the weekend and was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week for volleyball, the league office announced Monday. It marked the Colonials' first A-10 weekly award for volleyball this season.
Brown led the Colonials with 33 kills in a pair of matches last week as GW swept its final two Atlantic 10 Conference matches of the season. The sophomore pounded a team-high 19 kills in GW's 3-0 victory over Charlotte Thursday in North Carolina. She added 14 digs and a pair of service aces against the 49ers.
The triumph snapped a three-match skid that began Oct. 23 with a 3-2 loss to Charlotte at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. It also marked GW's first volleyball victory over the 49ers, one of the two new members of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
On Sunday at Smith Center, the Jacksonville, FL native recorded 14 kills and 12 digs for her second straight double-double and ninth of the season. Her effort helped the Colonials defeat Fordham, 3-0.
Brown's stats for the week: two matches, six games, 33 kills, 14 errors, 79 attempts, .241 hitting percentage, 26 digs, three block assists, six service aces and an assist for 40.5 total points.
GW (12-15, 5-8 A-10) closes out the 2005 season at home this weekend with a 7:00 p.m. match against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday followed by a 7:00 p.m. match against American on Saturday. Saturday's match is `Senior Night' and the final collegiate match for GW's four seniors.
