Volleyball Blocks Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-1

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW volleyball team posted a season-high 17 total blocks in a 3-1 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore Friday night at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Colonials won by the scores 30-15, 30-13, 22-30, 30-14 in one hour, 27 minutes.
GW senior Abigail Hatter (Manassas, VA) equalled her career high with a pair of solo blocks and assisted on six more as one of nine different Colonials to record a block assist or block solo.
Colonials junior Juliene McLaughlin (Lindsay, ONT) led all players with 16 kills and hit .353 with nine digs while teammate Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach, CA) added 11 kills and hit .360. Senior Shannon Parks (Marietta, GA) hit .538 with seven kills and no errors in 13 attacks.
UMES (5-28) was led by Eriel Jeffery's 10 kills and Stephanie Braxton's 16 digs.
After the Colonials breezed to easy victories in the first two games, it was the Hawks who came out strong in game three and built a 15-10 lead. GW closed to within 16-14 before another run by the Hawks gave the visitors a 21-15 lead on a service ace by Yael Rozner. Following a GW timeout, UMES got kills from four different players to take a commanding 29-19 lead and won the game on a kill by Maja Baltic.
Game four was less competitive as GW raced out to a 11-3 lead and was never seriously threatened.
GW out-hit UMES, .256 to .023 including .407 (15-4-27) in game four. The Colonials also scored 12 points on service aces compared to five for the visiting Hawks.
GW (13-15, 5-8 A-10) concludes the season Saturday night when it hosts American University (22-8) in a 7:00 p.m. match at Smith Center. The Colonials will honor their four graduating seniors in a prematch ceremony.
