Golf's Brian Carroll Qualifies for U.S. Amateur

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington's Brian Carroll has qualified has qualified for the 2004 U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held at the famed Winged Foot Country Club in Mamaroneck, NY, from Aug. 16-22. He fired a 68-66 at sectional qualifying at the Warren Golf Course on the University of Notre Dame campus in South Bend, IN, on Wednesday, July 21.
Among others in the field at South Bend, the sophomore from Crystal Lake, IL, defeated Matt Harmon of Michigan State and Stanford's Brandon Lawson.
The U.S. Amateur Championship, which is the oldest USGA Championship, was first played in 1895 at the Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island.
Carroll's success is just part of a great summer for the Colonials' golf team.
Newcomer TIm Johnson (Marblehead, MA) qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links after carding a 149 for 36 holes. Junior Dan Mirabella (Ann Arbor, MI) shot 77-69 and just missed qualifing for the Pub Links by one shot. Junior Andrew Gallo (Toronto, Ontario) played in the British Amateur and also will play in the Royal Canadian Amateur.
GW sophomore Jack Tyler (Novi, MI) finished 22nd among a field of professional golfers in the Michigan Open. He shot 292 for 72 holes.
In alumni news, GW golf and basketball alumnus Pat Tallent ('76) aced the third hole at the 2004 U.S. Senior Open championship Thursday at Bellerive Country Club near St. Louis.
Tallent, 51 of Vienna, VA, aced the par-3, 141-yard third to make it the 10th hole-in-one in Senior Open history. He used a 9-iron for his fifth ace of his career.Three of his first four came at prestigious courses: Winged Foot, Merion and Quaker Ridge.
"When you're hitting to that green you're hoping to hit the green," said Tallent of his tee shot."But I hit it on a perfect line, three steps left of the hole and it backed into the hole. It was good as I can hit."
