WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington's Jack Tyler (Novi, MI) and Alvaro Tapia (Panama City, Panama) have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Performer of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for men's golf, the league office has announced. It marks the second A-10 weekly honor for Tyler who won a Rookie of the Week award as a freshman last year.
Tyler fired an even-par 144 (75-69) to win the Rehoboth Beach Invitational Monday at the par-72, 6,664-yard Kings Creek Country Club on the Delaware shore. Tyler's performance helped George Washington capture the team title as well with a 596 (308-288) for the 36-hole event.
Tyler and Drexel's Jeffery Michner tied with 144s and a match of cards format was used to determine a single winner. The format consists of comparing the tied players' scores on the No. 1 handicap hole, in this case, the 17th hole. Tyler's score on No. 17 was lower than Michner's therefore Tyler was awarded the medalist trophy. Tyler shot six-under-par over the final 22 holes to take the lead.
Tapia, a freshman from Panama City, Panama, shot a five-over-par 149 (74-75) to tie for fourth place at the same tournament. It marked his first Top-10 finish of his collegiate career.
Tyler's second-round 69 improved his season stroke average to 74.4 which is second on the Colonials.
GW's next competition takes place Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 4-5 at the 54-hole Earl Yestingsmeyer Invitational hosted by Ball State University in Muncie, IN.
