Volleyball Comes Up Empty at American, 3-1

WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington volleyball team took a break from conference play to face crosstown rival American Tuesday at Bender Arena and dropped its seventh straight match. AU won by the scores, 30-26, 30-16, 28-30, 30-14, in one hour, 45 minutes.
After American took a two-games-to-none lead, the Colonials woke up in game three behind freshman Janine Brown (Jacksonville, FL) who came off the bench to spark GW to the 30-28 victory. Brown had a team-high 12 kills in the match, eight of which came in game three along with a solo block, a block assist and a service ace for a .333 hitting percentage.
The momentum was short-lived, however, as GW laid down in game four while AU rolled to a 7-0 lead at the start and coasted to the 30-14 victory.
AU hit .302 with 55 kills in the match while GW managed 46 kills en route to a .123 hitting percentage. Serve reception was a problem for the Colonials all night as the Eagles scored 12 points on aces to just five aces for GW. The Colonials did out-block AU, however, 11 to 9.5.
GW junior Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach,CA) was the only other Colonial in double-figure kills with 10 in 20 attempts for a .300 hitting percentage.
American's Cutrina Biddulph led the Eagles with 16 kills and hit .342 while teammate Erin Allgaier added 14 kills and a pair of block assists.
GW (4-15, 1-6 A-10) next hosts Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. at Smith Center. It marks the rematch of DU's 3-0 victory over GW on Sept. 25 in Pittsburgh.
