WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University has announced its 2003-04 women's basketball schedule, which features five 2003 NCAA Tournament teams, including Sweet 16 members Penn State and Boston College and national championship runner-up, Tennessee.
The Colonials host the Tennessee Volunteers at Smith Center Tuesday, December 30, at 7:00 p.m. as part of an outstanding non-conference home schedule for the 2003-04 season. In addition to Tennessee, GW hosts Big East Conference members Georgetown, Syracuse and Boston College. Oregon and Quinnipiac round out GW's non-conference home schedule.
The Colonials will also participate in the Junkanoo Jam Tournament in the Bahamas in early season action, taking on Sweet 16 member Penn St. in the first round and will then face either 2003 NCAA Tournament participant Kansas St. or Arizona St. in their second game. Completing GW's road schedule are games at Florida, Howard and Yale.
In Atlantic 10 Conference play, GW will defend its 2003 Atlantic 10 Tournament title when the Colonials play home-and-home series versus Dayton, Duquesne, La Salle, Richmond and 2003 NCAA Tournament participant, Xavier.
In A-10 East Division match-ups, GW travels to face Massachusetts, Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure and hosts Fordham, Temple, and Saint Joseph's in a nationally televised game on ESPN2 on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. The Colonials will also be televised on Atlantic 10 Television for their home games versus Dayton on February 15, 2004 and their regular season finale against Temple on Sunday February 29, at 12:00 p.m.
Head coach Joe McKeown returns for his 15th season at GW after posting his 12th 20-victory season in 2002-03 and claiming the program's fourth Atlantic 10 Tournament title. The Colonials return four of their five of their starters, from a well-decorated team that includes Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, Cathy Joens, Atlantic 10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Ugo Oha, Atlantic 10 Sixth Player of the Year Valerie Williams and Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team member Anna Monta?ana.
