One of the hard-hitting seniors on the GW Volleyball team, Ruth is a California girl who grew up on the volleyball court. She's a key reason behind the Colonials school-record 10-0 start and is currently helping the Colonials drive toward an Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament berth and a shot at the league title.
1- The GW volleyball roster is pretty much split between players from the East and West. Is it true that, when it comes to volleyball, West is best?
RL: Of course. WEST IS THE BEST!! How many other places can you play volleyball outside on the beach almost year around? I think the difference is that they breed volleyball players young. Lauren [Dunning] was playing volleyball in the crib and I have been playing for more than half my life. Volleyball is an addiction in the west.
2- Who is the funniest person on the team?
RL: My vote is for Abba [Greenleaf]. She is unique in her own and never fails to bring a smile to my face. She imitates Molly [Law's] yoga moves gracefully with her long legs dangling in the air. In reality though, Abba does lots of entertaining things, but for me it is her voice. She talks in a very high pitched voice, which makes what she says ever more amusing.
3- What's been your favorite road trip in your career?
RL: All I have to say is Spud gun and ice cream potatoes. Both of these I was introduced to on our Idaho trip. Over at the Downey's we ate like queens, sang Karaoke, saw ourselves imitated during the freshman skit, swam in the pool, went tanning, shot the spud gun and ate ice cream potatoes. Where else but Idaho could you do all of that in one afternoon without ever leaving your house.
4- Which A-10 school has the best volleyball fans?
RL: At one time I would have said Xavier because their crowd was loud and obnoxious. This year I would have to say GW has the greatest fans. The crew team did wonders showing up in their makeshift volleyball uniforms. Boys in girls spandex and kneepads is almost enough to distract even me.
5- Is Coach Coronel as calm in practice as he is during matches?
RL: Like in a match it really depends on the day. Generally though he is fairly calm. Some times I really do wonder what he is thinking. Jo, any explanations?
6- What do you guys usually eat for a pre-game meal?
RL: Snickers for Laura, Donuts for Katie, PB & J for me, Lauren goes for the banana. I really don't think it matters as long as it is food. Frosties from Wendy's are great pregame snacks too.
7- If you could pick a player from another GW varsity team to have on the volleyball team, who would you pick?
RL: Evan Johnson from the crew team would be my choice. He's a great athlete, student, and all around person. I think he would add lots of stories and adventures into our mix. Wait that would mean volleyball would have to go co-ed. Now that would be interesting.
8- If you could join another team at GW, which team would you join?
RL: Do I have to change teams? Well I guess if I must it would be...never mind I wouldn't want to be on another sports team.
9- When you, Lauren Dunning, Sarah Hokom and Laura Harrison pile into the van or bus for a road trip, who sits up front?
RL: The back seat in Jo's van is MINE!!!! Lauren's got the front seat next to Jojit. Laura and Sarah are in the other van so I'm not quite sure where they sit.
See there is Jo's van and then there is the party van. Have you ever had to listen to people play "bop it" for hours at a time and have had no means of escape? Enough said, run while you still can!
10- When Senior Day rolls around, will you be more sad than glad or more glad than sad?
RL: Gosh, I've waited so long to have some time as a normal college student. I'm scared though. I don't know what I'm going to do with all my time. On the whole though, I am going to be more sad than glad. I've been a part of a family for 4 years and next year, though I will still be a part of what is left here, I will not be a physical part. Granted, that also means no more preseasons. :)
