DAYTON, OH - The GW volleyball team bounced back from Friday's five-game loss with a five-game victory over defending A-10 champion Dayton Saturday in Ohio. The Colonials battled to a 28-30, 30-26, 30-28, 19-30, 15-11 triumph over the Flyers at UD's Frericks Center in a two-hour, 20-minute marathon. The win snapped the Flyers' seven-match winning streak and was UD's first defeat at home this season.
Juniors Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) and Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) had 19 kills each, to go with 16 and 13 digs, respectively, to lead the Colonials. The effort marked Hokom's fifth consecutive double-double. Lazzari committed just four hitting errors in 44 swings in hitting a match-high .341.
Sophomore Katie Downey (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) added her season-high 11 kills and a pair of block assists. Colonials' setter Lauren Dunning (Stockton, CA/St. Mary's) assisted on 50 of GW's 58 kills and added a team-high 17 digs and a block solo.
The Flyers were led by Susan Westbrock's 18 kills and just six errors in 40 attempts for a .300 percentage. Katie Beck added a match-high 22 digs for Dayton (12-4, 1-1 A-10) which lost for just the fourth time in 16 outings.
The victory tied the all-time series with the Flyers at 8-8. GW will host Dayton on October 25 in Washington.
GW (9-6, 1-1 A-10) returns to Smith Center to host La Salle on Oct. 4 in GW's first home match in nearly a month. That match takes place on Parents and Alumni Weekend and begins at 7:00 p.m.
