Sept. 18, 2002
WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University has announced its 2002-03 men's basketball schedule, which includes at least eight regionally televised appearances.
GW could play as many as six games against teams in the 2002 NCAA Tournament including a potential match-up against defending national champion Maryland in the BB&T Classic Dec. 8 at MCI Center. GW opponents from the 2002 NCAA Tournament field include Boston University, Connecticut, Texas, Maryland or Notre Dame and two games with Xavier. The Colonials also play seven games against five opponents from the 2002 NIT field: Dayton (twice), Richmond (twice), St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph's and Temple.
In the 2002 BB&T Classic, the Colonials will face Texas on Dec. 7 in the first round of the two-day tournament at MCI Center. The Longhorns return all five starters from last year's "Sweet 16" team. Maryland squares off against Notre Dame in the other opening round contest. The Fighting Irish are coached by GW alumnus Mike Brey ('82). Championship and consolation games will be played the following day.
GW opens its regular season Nov. 25 against Connecticut at the Hartford Civic Center. The GW-UConn match-up holds special significance for second-year coach Karl Hobbs who came to GW after spending eight seasons as an assistant at Connecticut where he recruited many of the current Huskies.
The Colonials host one of college basketball's all-time winningest coaches when Jim Phelan (819 career victories) brings Mount St. Mary's to Smith Center Nov. 29 for the ninth Red Auerbach Colonial Classic. The Mount joins Bucknell and Columbia to round out the tournament field. The Colonials also host Old Dominion in a non-conference home game.
In Atlantic 10 Conference action, GW will play a home-and-home series against West Division members Dayton, Duquesne, La Salle, Richmond and Xavier. The Colonials also host Fordham, Massachusetts and Saint Joseph's at Smith Center while traveling to Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure and Temple.
The Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament has undergone a format change for 2003. First-round games will be played at campus sites March 10 with the quarterfinal, semifinal and final round games taking place at the University of Dayton Arena March 13-15. All quarterfinal games, both semifinal games and the championship, are scheduled to be televised.
The Colonials, 12-16 in 2001-02, returns leading scorer and All-America candidate Chris Monroe (Hyattsville, MD/Good Counsel) along with A-10 All-Rookie Team member T.J. Thompson (Germantown, MD/Newport School) and six other returning letterwinners as well as four highly-touted newcomers.
