2003 Season Outlook

The George Washington University Softball team will begin their inaugural spring season in 2003 after coming off of a 3-1 record in the fall exhibition. The first-year team is led by head coach Leslie King Moore and assistant coach Keri Kubala. The main focus this first year is to build the foundation for the future success of Colonials Softball.
The pitching staff for the Colonials is young, but eager. Sophomore Jacqueline Kay (Loomis Chaffee School) is a lefty from Los Angeles, California, who threw her first no-hitter this fall against Coppin State. Jaclyn Sanderson (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills), another sophomore, will bring much needed experience to the mound after playing with the GW club softball team last season. Freshman Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA/Lithia Springs) will be joining the two sophomores on the staff when she is not playing in the field. Meyers is a Georgia All-State shortstop and a top all-around athlete. Kay and Meyers were named co-captains by their teammates.
Sharing duties behind the plate will be seniors Samantha Sordi (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) and Alison Scimeca (Latham, NY/Shaker). Sordi will be asked to play a big leadership role after captaining the club team last year. Scimeca, another club team stalwart, will also see time at third base.
At the hot corner, the Colonials have two strong freshmen, Erica Heikel (Duluth, MN/Duluth Central) and Kristen Miller (Rochelle Park, NJ/Academy for Medical Science Technology), while Kay and Sanderson will platoon at first base depending on the pitching rotation.
In the middle infield, speedy sophomores Ruthie Aerts (Boonton Twp., NJ/Mountain Lakes) and Lissa Moses (Hamden, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) will battle for the 2B position. Meyers, when not on the mound, will play shortstop, backed up by sophomore Marguerite Landgrebe (Malverne, NY/Sacred Heart Academy).
The outfield is led by seniors Edna Coonan (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan), Beth Howard (Bethlehem, PA/Nazareth), and Liz Zentos (North Olmsted, OH/North Olmsted). These three will bring experience and camaraderie to the team having played together on the GW club team. Also seeing time in the outfield will be sophomores Ashley Atkin (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott), Monica Foote (Youngstown, NY/Lewiston-Porter), and Tai Prince (Upper Marlboro, MD/Largo).
The inaugural season for GW Softball is full of hope and expectation. The team has simple goals; constant improvement, teamwork and having a positive experience. No doubt, there will be some hurdles to clear, but the 2003 Colonial Softball team is ready to lay the groundwork for a successful program at George Washington University.
