WASHINGTON, DC (September 29, 2001) - George Washington lost to Richmond in a physical match marked by 61 total penalties and exceptional goalkeeper play.
The Colonials (3-3-0) fell to .500 on the season, despite keeping constant offensive pressure on the Spiders for a majority of the match. Richmond's keeper Shawn Alexander made 10 saves on 22 shots by GW, including a key save on a penalty shot by junior forward Matthew Osborne (Bingham Notts, England/Toothill Comprehensive) in the 78th minute of the match.
The Colonials got on the board first in the opening period, scoring on a penalty kick by Osborne in the 28th minute. The Spiders would tie the match off a direct kick from the left wing from defender Grant Dickens that was put between the pipes by midfielder Paul Kelly in the 36th minute.
Knotted at 1-1, the Colonials came out of the half attacking Richmond's goal, peppering Alexander with 13 shots over the course of the half. The turning point of the match came when Alexander made a clutch save on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.
Senior midfielder Michael Goldman (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was pulled down in the box as he came free through Richmond's defense. Osborne took the ensuing penalty kick, only to have Alexander make an outstanding save to his right. Play continued and the Spiders broke through GW's defense. Richmond sophomore forward Ben Corfield put home a shot off a defensive rebound in the mouth of the goal to give the Spiders what would become the game-winning goal.
The Colonials will travel to Ohio next weekend to face two Atlantic 10 foes. GW plays at Xavier Musketeers on Friday, October 5, at 7:00 p.m. in Cincinnati, then travel to Dayton to take on the Flyers on Sunday, October 7, in a 1:00 p.m. match.
