CINCINNATI, OH (Oct. 5) - George Washington notched their first conference win on a rainy Friday evening in Cincinnati, OH as three Colonials scored to lift GW to a 3-2 victory.
Xavier struck first on a deflected shot by Musketeer Dan Limburg that ricocheted of a Colonial defender past keeper Nick Parypinski (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake). XU's Mike Kelley assisted on the score to put the Musketeers up 1-0 in the 32nd minute of the match.
GW would tie the match on a converted penalty kick by junior forward Matthew Osborne (Bingham Notts, Eng./Toothill Comprehensive). The goal was Osborne's sixth on the season. The Colonials took the lead 22 seconds later when sophomore Arnar Johannsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/C. C. of Iceland) chipped a shot over the head of XU's keeper Brian Schaeper who was charging the shot in the box.
The Musketeers tied the match 2-2 in the 53rd minute when XU's Sam Fiore placed a low shot into the net off a corner kick by teammate Rob Bakker. The Colonials would again answer the call, as senior midfielder Matt Pilkington (Manchester, Eng./Sheffield Hallam Univ.) blasted the game-winner past Schaeper off sophomore Justin Evans' (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) pass. Pilkington's goal tied him with Osborne with the team-leading total of six scores apiece.
The Colonials (4-3, 1-1) finish their Ohio trip with a match against Dayton on Sunday, October 7, at 1:00 p.m.
