DAYTON, OH (Oct. 7) - George Washington battled with Dayton to a 1-1 tie before losing in overtime on a score in the 94th minute of the match.
Overtime is an area that both these teams were familiar with, having played to three consecutive ties last season, and eight scoreless overtime periods in the 2000 season. As the two conference opponents renewed their rivalry in Dayton on Sunday, each squad scored once in regulation.
The Flyers opened the scoring just six minutes into the match as Christian Porto found the back of the net off a breakaway for his first collegiate goal. The assists on the goal were from junior Sunday Isename and freshman forward Chris Rolfe.
The Colonials got on the board when junior forward Matthew Osborne (Bingham, Notts, Eng./Toothill Comprehensive) scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 39th minute. Sophomore midfielder Justin Evans (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) sent a well-placed corner kick into the box where an unguarded Osborne headed the ball into the net for the first-half score.
Dayton would break the streak of scoreless overtime play when off a corner kick, Isename chipped the ball over GW keeper Nick Parypinski (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake). The Flyer's Michael Nsien was right on the goal line and got a head on it, as the ball bounced into the inside post for the game-winner at the 94:38 mark.
GW (4-4, 1-2) travels to Philadelphia, PA next weekend to face another pair of Atlantic 10 foes. The Colonials face Temple on Friday, Oct. 12, at 3:00 p.m. then take on St. Joseph's on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 1:00 p.m.
